About ISMaTeL 2021

Mathematical literacy is an important skill for students to master. It is crucial, not only  in helping students to solve daily problems more effectively, but also needed to support other literacy such as financial and technological literacy. The students’ abilities on mathematical literacy is one of the issues studied on an international scale. The results of study conducted by the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) through PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) and study by IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) through TIMSS (The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) greatly influence mathematics education policy making in various countries, focusing on improving students’ mathematical literacy skills. It is to say that the issue of achieving mathematical literacy remains an interesting issue for discussion. Through the second ISMaTeL 2021, the issue is raised to be discussed and explored in various perspectives such as what the concept of mathematical literacy is, how it relates to mathematics education, how other countries encourage the improvement of mathematical literacy skills, and what is the role of assessment in improving achievement in mathematical literacy. We do hope, some of these discussions may provide enlightenment to the seminar participants on the things that need to be done in mathematics teaching and learning.
